Dominican Republic Dream Project was topic of disussion at Comstock Park Rotary

Maria Blanco
Cuban born and West Michigan raised Maria Blanco was the guest speaker at Thursday's meeting of the Comstock Park Rotary at the Swan Inn.  Currently a teacher in Farmington, Michigan, Maria took an eight month leave of absence there in order to teach and work with the DREAM (Dominican Republic Education and Mentoring) Project.

"The Dominican Republic falls far behind the rest of the world when it comes to valuing good education" said Maria, adding that children go to school only a few hours in the morning.  Among other things, DREAM  offers kids an "after school program" thus providing children with a full day of school.

In addition to her passion for teaching and children, Maria is an artist and plans to have an entry in Grand Rapids' Art Prize for a second consecutive year.
