Gaga who?

Not gaga who but gaga what, and the answer is gaga ball. In July a number of young children took to the public podium of the Township Board Meeting and expressed their hopes that the Township would consider building a gaga ball pit at the Westgate Neighborhood Park.  After becoming educated on this sport, and hearing from local firefighters offering to help build the pit, the Township Board yielded to the public pressure and work has begun.  Gaga ball is o form of dodge ball and is a fast action sport.  Parents may want to prepare for bruised knees or knuckles.

The Ridge Covenant Church Celebrates 3rd Anniversary

A little over 3 years ago,  a new church was planted at 4453 Fruitridge N.W.  They worship in what had been an abandoned Jehovah Witnesses Hall.  Pastor Andy Parker has seen his congregation grow in three years and continues to provide spiritual guidance for his congregation and service to the community.

Alpine Meadows Mobile Home Celebrates with a Picnic

Alpine Meadows celebrated its annual summer picnic with its residents and while the rain stayed away, it was nearly impossible to stay dry thanks to a pool, a splash pad and the assistance of the Alpine Township Fire Department.  Alpine Meadows is the largest mobile home park in the township and the residents who call it home love it here.  In addition to WET, the Alpine Township Fire Department was on hand to distribute Fire Safety material and offer kids the opportunity to check out the fire engine and distributed ice cream.

 

Estate of Harry Skurkas

While the north end of Old Alpine Ave was occupied by bikers at the Bow Tie Tavern raising funds for Multiple Sclerosis, hundreds of cars lined the west side of Old Alpine from the many people attending the public auction of the estate of Harry Skurkas.  Harry and his sister Esther were regular attendees at Township meetings back in the eighties, and many would describe them as watchdogs for the community.  The estate auction drew hundreds of people.

Bow Tie Battles Multiple Sclerosis

The Bow Tie Tavern is one of the oldest establishments in Alpine Township and this year proprietor Mary Steinbrechter, staff and friends, and the motor cycle club Road Weasels once again hosted their annual fundraiser for Multiple Sclerosis.  Hundreds of bikers came out to participate in a Poker Run that begins and ends at the Bow Tie.  Funds raised for Multiple Sclerosis by the group since it's inception is probably close to $100,000.
