If you visited the Alpine Township Library this evening, you would have had these two young ladies greet you outside.  Both are Alpine Library volunteers.  They welcomed young would be artists to the art program sponsored by the library today.  The weather was great enough to conduct the program outside and thus protect the carpet of the Township Hall at least until the pet show is scheduled there.

Dorothy Alt Retires from Alpine KDL Library

After may years of faithful service, Dorothy Alt retired from the Alpine Township KDL Library this week.  Friends and acquaintances had the opportunity to share dinner with Dorothy at Mill Creek.  Wednesday friends are invited to share cake and give Dorothy their best wishes at the Board Room of the Township Hall.

Opportunity for Kids to Design their Own Playground

This Thursday, June 30, 2010,  kids and parents will have the opportunity to help design a new public playground that will be erected at the York Creek apartment complex in August.  The non-profit organization Kaboom! has teamed up with Amway  to bring this playground to a section of Alpine Township where  recreation is much needed.  York Creek is gracious in allowing this public park to be built on their property, and they will  perform the maintenance on the playground once it is built.  The Comstock Park Rotary Club is recruiting children of any age to help in suggesting how they want the playground to be designed.  They will also be recruiting adults to assist in erecting the playground in August.  In addition, the Rotary Club is involved in coordinating the activities associated with this event and for limited community fund raising.  Major funding of this project is provided by Amway, which will also provide a major portion of the volunteers who will make the playground a dream come true for many of the kids living in one of our neighborhoods.

At 8:00 am this morning the weather seemed as threatening as the storms that passed though the area very early Tuesday morning,

By noon, sun replaced the dark clouds enough for this couple from Reed City to have lunch behind the Alpine Township Hall. The couple came into town to visit the Attic Window Quilt Shop at 5307 Alpine NW, picked up a sandwich at the adjacent Subway, had a pleasant lunch and visited our KDL Library.

Stormy Nights

Storms last night brought plenty of thunder. lightning, rain, hail, high winds, and fear of tornadoes as funnels were sighted on Alpine Church Road and on Alpine and Six Mile Rd. Both of those areas were struck by tornadoes in 1965 thus raising fears of "deja vous" amongst those who experienced that tornado. It is not likely that a tornado actually touched down in Alpine Township. Most damage reported was minor. One mobile home resident was reported to have suffered minor injuries as she fell trying to find refuge at Fire Station I.

(Aaron Ogg, Grand Rapids Press) ALPINE TOWNSHIP -- A playground is coming to York Creek Apartments because of a partnership between Amway Corp. and a Washington D.C. non-profit that creates playspaces for low-income kids and others.

A KaBOOM! spokeswoman said Friday the playground is planned to be built in August at the nearly 5,000-tenant rental community northeast of Alpine Avenue and Four Mile Road NW. Neighborhood kids can offer ideas of what they want to see at a design session scheduled for July 1.

"Sometimes we get very imaginative stuff," said Alison Risso, of KaBOOM! Past suggestions have included roller coasters, NASCAR tracks and Jacuzzis, she added.

Those amenities likely are far-fetched, but ziplines, side-by-side slides and spring-loaded toy vehicles are among pieces of equipment installed elsewhere, she said.

"We ask them to build their dream playground," she said.

Happy Father's Day

What a treat to be able to spend Father's Day exactly as you want it. Not every father gets to do that so those of us who can should be grateful.

Having dinner with all the children and grandchildren, is of course, the greatest event of the day to look forward to. Watching a few of the World Cup Soccer games on a big screen is also special for Father's Day. Taking a few hours to drive along the beautiful Alpine Township country side this morning was the perfect way to start the day off.

Maranatha Summer Camp

Maranatha Bible Church just completed it's first week of Summer Camp. So far they have enjoyed the fine weather. Crafts are: Archery, Air Riflery, Beadie Buddies, Canoeing, Ceramics, Cheerleading, Cooking, Critter Catchers, Drama, Fishing, Handcrafts, Leather Craft, Creative Card Making, Outdoor Life, Photography, Riflery, Soccer, Swimming, Scrap Booking, Volleyball, and Ultimate Survival. Summer camp has become a tradition in Alpine Township that many kids wait for every year. It not only offers great activities and life lessons for the children, but alsot offers opportunities for teens to become involved in counseling. For those who don't have young children, Summer Camp is a barometer for when to take a vacation because it seems to always take place in great weather.
