The Kent County Department of Public Works is committed to a fully integrated solid waste management system. This system includes: waste reduction, reuse, recycling, expanded education in resource recovery, incineration with energy recovery, composting and landfilling, as outlined in the Kent County Solid Waste Management Plan and proposed 2011 amendments. The public comment period began on December 19, 2011. The Public Hearing will be held on March 7, 2012 at 7:00 pm in the Road Commission building located at 1500 Scribner Avenue NW, Grand Rapids, MI 49504.

The current recycling system for refuse disposal in Kent County aims to reduce the amount of solid waste sent for final disposal by volume reduction techniques and by various resource conservation and resource recovery programs. It also addresses collection processes and transportation needs that provide the most cost effective, efficient service.

Inside the Kent County Material Recovery Facility at 977 Wealthy NW in Grand Rapids. The facility offers tours and educational progams

The Materials Recovery Facility at 977 Wealthy SW, Grand Rapids is a sorting facility designed to accept residential recyclable materials. Recyclables are sorted according to type, then prepared for shipping to the next processor by pressing the recyclables into bales. Tours are approximately one hour in length and include a classroom discussion about recycling as well as a facility overview on the catwalk overlooking the functioning equipment. Kent County's new single-stream recycling facility began tours in September 2010. The facility offers a safe, clean environment to learn about recycling.

Alpine Township Hosts Training Session for Election Workers

It was a full house at the Alpine Township Hall Wednesday as about 70 election workers from Algoma, Alpine, Grand Rapids and Sparta Townships as well as from the city of Walker received a briefing on the upcoming presidential primary election and some of the changes they may have to contend with. The meeting was conducted by Kent County Election Director Susan deSteiguer. The County Clerk's Office Elections Division oversees all elections conducted in Kent County with respect to Michigan Election Law and Federal Election Law. The Primary Presidential Election will take place in Michigan on Tuesday, February 28, 2012.

Guest speaker at the Comstock Park Rotary meeting Thursday was Alpine Township Supervisor Alex Arends. Alex presented the audience with an overview of Alpine Township, its financial condition, highlights of 2011, and future trends. He also shared photos of many of the community events that occurred last year. Many of these photos as well as information about the Township's financial condition (dashboard) can be accessed via the Township's blog http://alpinetwp.blogspot.com.

Remember Mill Creek Days? Many local residents remember the parade along West River Road and the festivities and booths at Dwight Lydell Park. The event was sponsored by the Comstock Park Jaycees and the entire community participated in one form or another. Mill Creek Days stopped over a decade ago and the Jaycee organization disbanded.

Wouldn't it be nice if a community event of that nature was revived in the Alpine Township/Comstock Park community? Dawn Swafford happens to think so. Dawn is a long time resident of Alpine Township and is employed at Edward Jones. Both her and Financial Advisor Dana Quick would love to once again see a community celebration celebrated in the Comstock Park area and they are taking steps to make it happen.

On Tuesday they met with leaders from Comstock Park and Kenowa Hills Schools, Alpine Township Officials, leaders from Comstock Park Service Organizations, and representatives from the business community to explore options. Based on the enthusiasm expressed by everyone, we will be hearing more from this group. Anyone with ideas or suggestions is encouraged to contact Dawn at (616) 784-9622

Free Health Care Clinic for Teddy Bears

The Alpine Township Branch of the KDL Library hosted a clinic for teddy bears Tuesday morning and dozens of preschoolers took advantage of it by bringing in their teddy bears for a free check up. Teddy bears were treated on the spot for various ailments ranging from headaches to more serious ailments and injuries. Library assistants were on hand to teach the children ways to keep Teddy healthy and happy. Most teddies received a clean bill of health before the program was over. The program was brought to the children in partnership with Helen DeVos Children's Hospital.

Theresa is a long time resident of Alpine Township and before transfering to the Alpine Township library, she worked at the Kent City Branch. Theresa's favority color is blue, and she loves chocolate and hot tea. She is excited to work with Donna Meyering and Library Manager Laura Weld and be closer to home.

How is the Kenowa Hills Public School System preparing students for life after school?

Those were some of the questions posed by Kenowa Hills Superintendent Gerald Hopkins to community business leaders at Wednesday's business forum held at Kenowa Hills Junior High School. The forum gave school administrators and board members the opportunity to hear directly from those people that interview and hire new employees, and what it is they look for in prospective employees. It also gave the guests the opportunity to learn about Kenowa Hills Public Schools, its recent successes, and future objectives and focus. Kenowa Hills already has a good track record of seeing it's graduates sign up for college, and is committed to make its graduates as college ready or career ready as possible. More dialogue with the business community is expected in the near future.

Alpine Township Staff Recognized

The Alpine Township Office was closed for a brief period of time today so that staff could have a luncheon meeting held in one of the private dining rooms of Fire Mountain Restaurant.

Employees were presented with a photo frame that boasted a photo of a huge billboard that rendered appreciation for the Alpine Township staff. Since a search of the community did not uncover the actual location of the billboard, it is assumed that the billboard is only virtual, but was appreciated none the less.

Also invited to the luncheon were township officials and committee chair persons.

Over 30 preschoolers took a trip on the wild side Tuesday morning at the Alpine Township branch of the Kent District Library and hunted for their favorite letters — safari style! This virtual journey to the savannah and jungle allowed the children to experience the alphabet in a new and exciting way through interactive and creative activities. Safari activities included creating a “crocodile” using old jewel cases and fishing for letters at the watering hole, then making one's own binoculars and using them to find the letters needed to spell the names of jungle creatures.

According to Brenda Brame, Program Manager for the Kent County Tax Credit Coalition at the Heart of West Michigan United Way, United Way is providing tax preparation and e-Filing services, free to anyone whose income is $55,000 or less, thanks in part to community volunteers.

This past season they served over 7,500 taxpayers, bringing over $10.8 million back into the community. You may be one of many more under-served taxpayers that may need their help. Help is available by calling 211 for an appointment. And you don't have to go far for your appointment. The Comstock Park Branch of the Kent District Library at 3943 West River Drive NE is conveniently accessible just to serve the residents of Alpine Township and it's surrounding area.

The Earned Income Tax Credit is a Federal tax credit that low income, working families and individuals are eligible to claim on their income tax return. However, every year about 25% of families nation-wide fail to claim this credit. It is our organization's goal to ensure that every eligible family in the Kent County area claims this credit through our Free Income Tax Preparation Sites.

The Kent County Tax Credit Coalition is comprised of community organizations including the Heart of West Michigan United Way, Kent County Department of Human Services, Baxter Community Center, the Internal Revenue Service and various financial institutions working cooperatively to utilize the Earned Income Tax Credit (EIC) and other various tax credits as a means to improve financial independence for working, low and moderate income individuals and families. The Kent County Tax Credit Coalition aims to provide additional dollars to our families and thus, the businesses and the local community. The Coalition works to achieve the above goal through the provision of information and the development of Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites, which have the capability to assist eligible wage earners to access EITC dollars and other credits in their income tax returns.

Kent County Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Conducts Fund Raiser

The Kent County Volunteer Emergency Response Team, (C.E.R.T.) held a Spaghetti Dinner fund raiser Saturday night at Peter and Paul School Gym in Grand Rapids. The spaghetti was awesome and so were the meatballs. There were auctions of all types, with many donations from generous businesses. The fundraiser was organized by J's Journey, a Comstock Park business.

The Kent County Volunteer Citizens Emergency Response Team was created in January 2011. Since then it has offered over 30 classes and graduated over 500 citizens in disaster preparedness.

Following a tornado, major gas leak, act of terrorism, chemical accident, airplane cars, or other major disaster, residents may be on their own for a period of time because of the size of the area affected, lost communications, and impassable roads.

The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program supports local response capability by training volunteers to organize themselves and spontaneous volunteers at the disaster site, to provide immediate assistance to victims, and to collect disaster intelligence to support responders’ efforts when they arrive.

By becoming a CERT volunteer and completing the training, you can be better prepared for the unexpected. Whether it is an act of terrorism, a natural or a man-made disaster, you can be directly involved in saving and sustaining lives and property.

The State of Michigan is not the only institution that celebrated a birthday today. (their 175th) The Comstock Park Rotary celebrated their 60th birthday, and was honored to have the 94 year old only surviving charter member Martin Buth participate in the celebration. Special speaker for the program was Martin's nephew Paul Buth, who in 2008 participated in "From Sea to Sea" a Bike Tour from Seattle to Jersey City. Paul shared a slide show with highlights of the tour which covered 3,881 miles (6,246 kms). Paul was one of about 120 cyclists who completed the trip. Between them, they raised over a million dollars for hunger fighting causes.

Comstock Park Relay for Life Kicks Off

Organizers and supporters of Comstock Park's Relay for Life celebrated their New Year this evening. The program in support of the American Cancer Society is scheduled to be held beginning Friday. May 18 at Comstock Park High School,and tonight was kick-off night at the American Legion, Post47 Louis Teistler. Supporters enjoyed delicious homemade food, stories from cancer survivors and cancer patients care takers,and shared comradery. The team is hoping to have 20 teams participate and raise about $40,000.

On a hot summer day nearly half a century ago, an African American preacher with no official title or rank gave voice to our Nation's deepest aspirations, sharing his dream of an America that ensured the true equality of all our people. From the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. inspired a movement that would push our country toward a more perfect Union.

At a time when our Nation was sharply divided, Dr. King called on a generation of Americans to be "voices of reason, sanity, and understanding amid the voices of violence, hatred, and emotion." His example stirred men and women of all backgrounds to become foot soldiers for justice, and his leadership gave them the courage to refuse the limitations of the day and fight for the prospect of tomorrow. Because these individuals showed the resilience to stand firm in the face of the fiercest resistance, we are the benefactors of an extraordinary legacy of progress.

Today, Dr. King is memorialized on the National Mall where he once spoke, a symbol of how far our Nation has come and a testament to the quiet heroes whose names may never appear in history books, but whose selflessness brought about change few thought possible. Dr. King's memorial reminds us that while the work of realizing his remarkable dream is unending, with persistence, progress is within our reach.

On the Martin Luther King, Jr., Federal Holiday, we celebrate the man who fought for the America he knew was possible. Dr. King's faith in a God who loves all His children and a Nation grounded in the promise of equality would not let him rest until victory was won. As we work to meet the challenges of our time from fixing our schools so every child gets a world class education to ensuring all Americans have access to strong and secure economic opportunity let us draw strength from Dr. King's stirring affirmation that "Everybody can be great because everybody can serve." In his memory, let us continue climbing toward that Promised Land, one more fair and more just for all people.

Home Repair Services the Topic at the Comstock Park Rotary Meeting

How can you get major repairs such as a new roof for at as little as 10% of the actual costs? At Home Repair Services, that's where, provided your family income is below the Kent County medium income. And where can you rent tools, or attend free fix-it training? The same place you can get financial counseling on home foreclosure. That place is Home Repair Services. At Home Repair Services, they are deeply concerned about the impact of foreclosure on individual families and our entire community. But concern isn’t enough. They’re also taking action. Their Financial Counseling programs helps about 1,600 families each year – one of the largest such non-profit programs in Michigan. They work directly with families and lenders to prevent foreclosure whenever possible.

These are some of the services offered to Kent County residents, many who, like the Rotarians at Thursday's meeting, are not aware of the depth of services offered. They were fully explained by Stan Greene, Resource Development Manager for Home Repair Services, and guest speaker at the Rotary meeting. Stan was accompanied by Coleen Downey, Events Coordinator. Home Repair Services has its origins with Catholic Social Services but has been a self supporting organization for over 20 years. Initially their services were focused on needy elderly, but their focus changed over the years and they offer assistance to all homeowners who are trying to maintain their home while experiencing financial restraints. Alpine Township Culver's Hosts Fund Raisers for Vietnam Veterans of America

The Vietnam Veterans of America Michael J. Bost Chapter 18 held a fundraiser on Tuesday evening at the Alpine Township Culver's, 4280 Alpine Ave., Comstock Park, Michigan. The local Culver's donated a certain percentage of purchases made to the local chapter of the Vietnam Veterans.

Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA) is the only national Vietnam veterans organization congressionally chartered and exclusively dedicated to Vietnam-era veterans and their families.

Chapter 18 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, received its VVA charter on April 9, 1982. From its beginnings nearly 30 years ago, Chapter 18 has been involved in a wide array of community-service activities. That includes taking part in a local MS Walk, sponsoring the appearance of the Moving Wall, doing school presentations, supporting Special Olympics, working with the local VA clinic, supporting Gold Star Mothers, and donating holiday food baskets to the needy. Members live up the VVA motto, 'In Service to America'. President of the local chapter is Jim Pike.

Barbara Jean Erhart passed away on Tuesday, December 27th, at her home in Plainfield Township at the age of 84. Barb grew up in Alpine Township and was a graduate of Sparta High School. After her retirement from Muskegon Piston Ring, she devoted much of her time to the Alpine Township Historical Commission to which she was appointed as an officer. Barb also served on several other Historical Commissions including Sparta. She made genealogy her life work and in addition to her devotion to historical commissions, she was always eager to help anyone who requested assistance.

In addition to her sister in law, nephews, niece and great nieces and nephews, she will be greatly missed by her Alpine Township Historical Committee family, and friends far and near.

Two former Kenowa Hills High School students who were recipients of scholarships last year visited the Comstock Park Rotary Club Thursday and talked a little about their life as college students and the career paths they are travelling.

Attending the meeting were Andrew Stephens, now a freshman student at University of Michigan, and and Jillian Piccard, a freshman student at Michigan State University.

As part of vocation month, speaker was Brent Beuschel, a Rotarian and owner of the new Beuschel Funeral Home. Brent touched upon a number of things, stressing good customer service was as important a part of funeral directors as it is for any other business. The club members present enjoyed the presentation, which included a few bloopers. This was the last meeting of the year for the club, which meets almost every Thursday at 12:15 PM at the Swan Inn Restaurant on the corner of Alpine Ave. and 6 Mile Rd. NW.

Construction of Perrin Brewing Co. is on its way

Construction of the Perrin Brewing Company began in earnest this week, with lumber going up for a building addition and the foundation being poured. The Alpine Township Board of Trustees approved a micro brewer liquor license for Perrin Brewing Company LLC this week, which, if approved, by the Michigan Liquor Control Commission, will allow the company to open the micro brewery next spring.

The brewery is being built at 5910 Comstock Park Drive NE and should be ready for business bt May 2012. The company intends to open a microbrewery, wholesale beer distributorship, and tasting room. It would have the capacity to be able to produce 2,500 to 3,500 barrels of beer the first year, according to the owners, and the company has room to expand if the brewery becomes successful. Distribution will initially be limited to Michigan.

The intent is to make the brewery a public facility and public tours will be available. The owners indicated theyalso hope to hold some outdoor events and participate in community events.

One of the owners is Jarred Sper, a West Michigan native and former Marine Sergeant. Another principal is Randy Perrin, owner of Perrin Properties LLC. Contractor for the construction is Randy's brother Dan Perrin.

Friday will be the last day for Alpine Township Librarian Sarah Hartung. Sarah has taken advantage of a great career opportunity that will offer her full time employment.

The library staff ordered cake and offered Alpine Township employees the chance to share in the event celebration. Those on the Township staff pass along their best wishes for Sarah. She will be greatly missed.

Nearly a hundred children and parents showed up at the Alpine Township Hall Tuesday afternoon to construct gingerbread homes. The program was sponsored by the local KDL library and the response was far greater than expected, Some of the houses ended up being consumed, some were taken home to show off to family members, and others were made for Santa to enjoy on Christmas Eve.

Work on Sewer Main Trunk Has Started

The weather has been assisting workers in getting a head start on replacing main sewer trunks along both York and Strawberry Creeks in Alpine Township. Some of the areas where the current sewer trunks are buried have been difficult to reach for proper maintenance. The pipes are about fourty years old and being replaced thanks to being awarded a low interest loan via the Michigan State Revolving Fund. In addition to the replacement of the trunk lines along Strawberry and York Creek, there are plans to repair or reline the Mill Creek trunk line late fall of 2012 or Spring 2013 pending approval of an additional low interest loan. The Township has also received a grant to cover 90% design engineering of the project, and is anticipating a similar grant for the Mill Creek project. Completion day for the York and Strawberry Creeks projects is Labor Day 2012 but as long as the weather cooperates, completion could be much earlier.

Only one week left before Christmas. This Saturday, Alpine Township Hall became a temporary distribution point for the Santa Claus Girls. The Santa Claus Girls (santaclausgirls.org) is a 100% volunteer organization that serves as a distribution network for gifts during the holidays. All donations stay within Kent County and over 12,000 families were served by the Santa Clause Girls organization.

While some volunteers were busy delivering presents for the Santa Claus Girls, other area residents and youth took advantage of the Salvation Army's Santa Claus Breakfast held at their retreat center at Little Pine Island. The breakfast was open to any member in the community and families enjoyed a good breakfast, met with Santa, had their picture taken, or participated in arts and crafts. A number of volunteers from our local community were also on hand assisting Salvation Army staff.

A Thanksgiving Project

For many years now, certain members and friends of the Comstock Park Rotary get together around Thanksgiving and volunteer for a specific project: Find a family that has a member with physical disabilities that is in need of a wheelchair ramp, and construct it for them.

Like almost every year, neither finding a family or building the ramp posed a problem for this group of dedicated people.

A single mom and her teenage daughter had recently moved into a modular home. The daughter has spinabifida and is confined to wheelchair. Since they moved in, the mother had been "bouncing" her daughter down a regular set of steps, or sometimes she would lay a sheet of plywood on the steps and roll her up and down the sheet of plywood. This was very steep and therefore unsafe.

Had the family paid for the lumber and hired a contractor, the cost would have been about $3,500. Thanks to the expertise and generosity of this group of well-doers and financial support of the Comstock Park Rotary, this family has something to be very thankful for this Christmas. The appreciation shown by the members of the family is all the reward that was necessary to convince the group to do another wheelchair ramp project next year.

Comstock Park Graduate Jenica Moore - Building Leadership in Nigeria

Guest speaker at the Comstock Park Rotary today was Jenica Moore, a Comstock Park graduate, currently attending Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo. Jenica has been the recipient of a number of Rotary awards and has also served as a Rotary ambassador to a number of countries. This year she had the opportunity to spend several months in Nigeria and she was anxious to tell the members of the Comstock Park Rotary about her experiences. She talked about the Christian and Muslim factions that often result in creating violence. She also talked about how many people do not begin their education until much later in life, often the result of enlightenment.

In addition to the presentation, Jeremy Kelley, a local resident and father, presented a plaque to the Rotary chapter in appreciation for their sponsorship of a North West Little League Baseball team.

The club also elected a new member to the board, Melissa Graveling, an accountant with Willis and Jurasek.

Santa Makes Quick Stop by Railroad

Once again Santa gave his reindeer a rest as he travelled from Comstock Park to Manistee via the Marquette Railroad this Saturday. Beginning in Comstock Park, where over a hundred children and parents greeted Santa at 9:30 this morning, the train left for a stop in Sparta and beyond, with Manistee as its final destination. Santa was accompanied by Mrs. Claus as well as a half a dozen elves who passed on candy canes to all the good children in attendance. The train arrived on time and left on time, thanks to a schedule adhered to by conductor Wayne who coordinated the entire event. Our thanks go to the Marquette Railroad for sponsoring this event each year, and the Kent County Sheriff's Department for keeping everybody safe.

Speaking of Railroads - Grand Rails 2012 Is Coming Up

Did you know that the Grand Rapids Model Railroad Historical Society rents a building adjacent to where the Santa Train stopped today? Inside you will find a replica of the Pere Marquette railroad as it appeared circa 1945. Those visiting Santa on the Pere Marquette train this morning also had the opportunity to see the exhibit. The club meets each Tuesday from 7:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. They have 750 feet of main line and 350 feet of branch line track and they are modeling the car ferry service that ran from Ludington, Michigan to Manitowoc, Wisconsin. The Club is a 501(c)(3) organization and is establishing a model railroad museum and a library in their building. For questions contact Skip Luyk at heluyk1@comcast.net.

From July 29 - August 4th 2012 the club will host "Grand Rails 2012", the 77th annual convention of the The National Model Railroad Association. The Comstock Park Rotary enjoyed their Christmas Luncheon Thursday at the Swan Inn Restaurant. In addition to a special meal prepared by the Swan Inn, some members brought appetizers and deserts. Rotary members were entertained by 7 members of the West Michigan Blue Grass Association who held a jam session, much to the delight of their audience. The West Michigan Bluegrass Music Association is based out of Lowell, Michigan, and recently celebrated their 16th birthday. They are a dynamic and active group, putting on one or more monthly events throughout the year. Their flagship events are the two bluegrass festivals that they host in May and September. Dutch Mocha Cake Serves 12

__ 2 cups whipping cream

__ 2 packets (4.8 grams each) Crowny vanillin sugar (optional)

__ 4 tablespoons General Foods Suisse Mocha mix

__ 3 tablespoons Nestle Quick Chocolate mix

__ 1 cup powdered sugar

__ 2 packages (24 count each) lady fingers (crisp, not spunge)

__ 1/2 cup very strong coffee

__ rum (optional)

__ 1/4 cup Heath English Toffee Bits

Place whipping cream and vanillin sugar in a bowl

Whip until peaked

Fold in the mixture of powdered sugar, mocha and chocolate mix

Quickly dip bottom of lady finger in strong coffee

Place on serving tray, make a row of 12

Lightly sprinkle with rum if desired

Top the layer with whipped cream mixture

Repeat process 3 more times building 4 layers

Use remaining whipped cream mixture to cover the sides

Sprinkle with Heath English Toffee Bits

Refrigerate or store in cold place until chilled and firm enough to slice,

When we commemorate Pearl Harbor Day on December 7, our thoughts travel to the over 2,400 Americans who were killed that fateful day 70 years ago. There were others who survived that terrible ordeal, and one of those was long time Alpine Township resident Henry Emelander. Henry passed away this year at the age of 91. He was a wonderful man and an inspiration to many. For many,commemorating Pearl Harbor Day includes remembering Henry Emelander.

Presidential Proclamation--National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day

Nearly 70 years ago, on December 7, 1941, our service members and civilians awoke on a quiet Sunday to a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor by Japanese forces. Employing whatever weapons were at hand, those who defended Hawaii that fateful morning stand as examples of the selfless heroism that has always characterized the Armed Forces of the United States. More than 3,500 Americans were killed or wounded, and the images of burning battleships and the grief for lives lost were forever seared into our national memory.

The deadly attack on Pearl Harbor did not accomplish its mission of breaking the American spirit. Instead, it reinforced our resolve. Americans responded with unity and courage to a tragedy that President Franklin D. Roosevelt called "a date which will live in infamy." In the aftermath of Pearl Harbor, thousands of resolute individuals immediately volunteered their service to a grieving Nation. Sixteen million of America's sons and daughters served during World War II, and more than 400,000 paid the ultimate sacrifice in defense of life and liberty. Countless other patriots served on the home front, aiding the war effort by working in manufacturing plants, participating in rationing programs, or planting Victory gardens. In the face of great loss, America once again showed the resilience and strength that have always characterized our great country.

The Allied Forces battled the scourge of tyranny and ultimately spread the transformative march of freedom. As we recognize the 65th anniversary of the end of World War II this year, we honor not only those who gave their lives that December day, but also all those in uniform who travelled to distant theaters of war to halt the progression of totalitarianism and hate. In honor of all who have borne the cost of battle throughout America's history, let us pledge to meet our debt of honor and uphold the ideals they fought to preserve.

The Congress, by Public Law 103 308, as amended, has designated December 7 of each year as "National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day."

Girls Scout Cadettes Earn Silver Award

Many young people have no idea about community life. Some look around their neighborhood or school wondering how they can contribute to make a change for the better. That's exactly what three cadettes belonging to Girl Scout Troup 2378 of the Michigan Shore to Shore Council did earlier this year. The teens found a project that would improve the quality of life of children in our community. For their effort, the cadettess earned the Girl Scouts' Silver Award, the highest award cadettes can receive in the Girl Scouts. Earning this award gave the three teens the opportunity to demonstrate their leadership abilities, organizational skills, determination, and dedication to improving their community.

The cadettes found an apartment unit at York Creek Apartments that Land & Co. has donated for use by the Comstock Park Schools for various after school programs. In addition, the unit is being used by numerous organizations such as Arbor Circle, Bethany Christian Services. The cadettes discovered that the unit was in dire need of painting and decoration, new furnishing, and organization of books, supplies and equipment. They painted the entire unit in bright colors, decorated the walls, painted a wall mural, obtained some attractive furniture, and built bookshelves and shelving in a storage room.

Sunday afternoon, the cadettes hosted an open house of the facility that was attended by family, friends, and other supporters. Congratulations are in order for Becky Clawson, Leah Pratt and Emily Roys and their Scout leader Sally Roys.

Shop with a Sheriff at the Alpine Township Walmart

To be escorted from Walmart in a patrol card by the Kent County Sheriff's Department is usually not something to brag about, but to be escorted in a patrol car to Walmart....now that turned out to be a real treat for about 50 children this early Sunday morning. It was all part of the Kent County Sheriff's Department's "Shop with a Sheriff" program. Over 50 kids met at Sam's Club's parking lot and paired up with a deputy or officer of the Kent County Sheriff's Department and were transported by vehicles with lights flashing and sirens blaring to the nearby Walmart here in Alpine Township. There they were met by other deputies who escorted the kids into the store and helped them spend about $100 each on clothing essentials for themselves. In addition, participants were able to spend another $20 for either another family member or purchase a present for themselves. The $6,000 used for this project came from generous contributors in the community. Kids also ate donuts, received Junior Deputy t-shirts, and had the opportunity to have their picture taken with the deputy and Santa Claus.

Alpine Township hosted the quarterly meeting of the Kent County Chapter of the Michigan Township Association Thursday. Addressing the the members were 63rd District Court Judge Sara Smolenski, and WZZM Channel 13 weatherman George Lessons.

Focus of Judge Smolenski's presentation was the current Medical Marijuana law. George Lessons talked about weather focecasting, and his predictions for the winter of 2012.

One of our Nation's oldest and most cherished traditions Thanksgiving Day brings us closer to our loved ones and invites us to reflect on the blessings that enrich our lives. The observance recalls the celebration of an autumn harvest centuries ago, when the Wampanoag tribe joined the Pilgrims at Plymouth Colony to share in the fruits of a bountiful season. The feast honored the Wampanoag for generously extending their knowledge of local game and agriculture to the Pilgrims, and today we renew our gratitude to all American Indians and Alaska Natives. We take this time to remember the ways that the First Americans have enriched our Nation's heritage, from their generosity centuries ago to the everyday contributions they make to all facets of American life. As we come together with friends, family, and neighbors to celebrate, let us set aside our daily concerns and give thanks for the providence bestowed upon us.

Though our traditions have evolved, the spirit of grace and humility at the heart of Thanksgiving has persisted through every chapter of our story. When President George Washington proclaimed our country's first Thanksgiving, he praised a generous and knowing God for shepherding our young Republic through its uncertain beginnings. Guest speaker at today's Alpine Township Historical Commission's monthly meeting was Tim Van Nest, a Kent City resident who, with his wife Nancy, shared anecdotes and photos of their 2,600 mile hike along the Pacific Crest Trail from Mexico to Canada, across California, Oregon and Washington. The Comstock Park Educational Foundation held its 3rd Annual Holiday Tree Silent Auction and Spaghetti Dinner Saturday night. The spaghetti was great and the desert fantastic (from Amore). Participants had the opportunity to bid on over thirty trees. The award for most best liked tree went to York Creek Apartments, which also one an award for best first year entry. The tree decorated by the staff of Alpine Township was named most traditional tree, and received the highest bid ($200). Music was provided by students. Students also provided some of the art on display.

Santa Arrives by Reindeer at Fruitbasket Flowerland

If there was any place in the Towship today that hinted the Christmas season is near, it would have been at Fruitbasket Flowerland where Santa was spotted, reindeer and all. Kids enjoyed not only meeting Santa and a few of the reindeer but were able to make their own reindeer food that they can can scatter over their lawn Christmas eve to attract the reindeer to their home. Some took the opportunity to decorate Christmas cards.

Armed Robbery Awareness Workshop

Alpine Township hosted an Armed Robbery Awareness workshop Tuesday evening that was attended by 25 owners, managers and employees of businesses located on or near Alpine Ave. The meeting was conducted by Alex Arends who is a former president of the Crime Prevention Association of Michigan, and continues to maintain his membership in the International Society of Crime Prevention Practitioners, and Sgt. David Kok, who heads the Kent County Sheriff's Community Services Department. The emphasis was on employee and customer safety and attendees also received tips on how to make their establishment less attractive to robbers, as well as conduct during and after a robbery.

There has been an recent increase in the number of armed robberies that occurred along Alpine Ave. It is believed, however, that all of them have been solved and suspects arrested with the help of information provided by alert victims and citizens.

The Comstock Park School Foundation will be holding a Spaghetti Dinner fund raiser on Saturday, November 19, 2011 from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. at the Comstock Park High School. Cost will be $6.00 per adult, $3.00 for children 5yrs – 12 yrs, and free for children 5 yrs and under.

Menu consists of Spaghetti, featuring Janine Fidler’s Famous Sauce, Salad, Breadsticks, Dessert and Beverage thanks to generous donations by Vitale’s and Olive Garden. Music and art displays will be provided by students from Kdg. – 12th Grade. There will be a silent auction for over 30 trees with various themes being donated by area businesses and organizations. The time of the auction is from 6:00 P.M - 7:30 P.M. The staff of Alpine Township is donating a tree with the theme of "A Taste Of Alpine Township" The tree displays several homegrown products including apples, and it includes coupons and gift cards for over a dozen Alpine Township restaurants. The value of the tree with the products and gift cards/certificates is estimated at about $250 and the staff of Alpine Township is excited that it can help raise funds for the School Foundation. The Mission of the Comstock Park School foundation is to generate and distribute financial and other resources to and for the Comstock Park School District, for enrichment programs and other projects aimed at enhancing the quality of education and educational opportunities throughout the district.

Comstock Park Rotary Club Eyes New International Project

• 884 million people in the world do not have access to safe water. This is roughly one in eight of the world’s population. (WHO-UNICEF)

• 1.8 million children die every year as a result of diseases caused by unclean water and poor sanitation. This amounts to around 5000 deaths a day. (UNDP)

• The simple act of washing hands with soap and clean water can reduce diarrheal diseases by over 40%. (UNICEF)

• Providing water and hygiene education reduces the number of deaths caused by diarrhoeal diseases by an average of 65%. (WHO)

• Water-related disease is the second biggest killer of children worldwide, after acute respiratory infections like tuberculosis. (UNDP)

• The weight of water that women in Africa and Asia carry on their heads is commonly 40 pounds, the same as the average airport luggage allowance. (UNDP)

• Water and sanitation infrastructure helps people take the first essential step out of the cycle of poverty and disease

Just a few of these facts alone were enough to have the Comstock Park Rotary Club explore partnering with Living Water in order to provide water and sanitation skills to a poverty stricken community elsewhere in the world. Club member Todd VandenToorn explained how Living Water International, addresses this most basic of needs by helping deprived communities acquire safe, clean water. Their goal is to substantially ease the global water crisis while addressing root causes such as injustice, oppression, and abject poverty. As this happens, communities and worldviews are transformed—both among those in desperate physical need, and among those who have been blessed with much. The Rotary club is looking at raising enough funds to drill a new well, provide enough man power to help drill it, and provide training for sanitary skills.

Litehouse Foods is donating $40,000 of salad dressing product with 100% of the proceeds from the sale of product being used to implement Hydraid BioSand Water Filters in Honduras, Ghana and the Dominican Republic. This is is support of Rotary District 6290’s Thirsting to Serve project, and is its leading promotion and distribution initiative.

Alpine Township Trustees were well represented Thursday evening at the annual meeting sponsored each year by the Kent County Road Commission. Managing Director John Rice gave a good update on Kent County roads, and some of the changes that were made in equipment, material usage and personnel in order to maintain high quality roads despite decreasing revenues and escalating costs. John Rice also discussed highlights and the pros and cons of Governor Snyder's plans on improving infrastructure and changes in funding.

Today, our Nation comes together to honor our veterans and commemorate the legacy of profound service and sacrifice they have upheld in pursuit of a more perfect Union. Through their steadfast defense of America’s ideals, our service members have ensured our country still stands strong, our founding principles still shine, and nations around the world know the blessings of freedom. As we offer our sincere appreciation and respect to our veterans, to their families, to those who are still in harm’s way, and to those we have laid to rest, let us rededicate ourselves to serving them as well as they have served the United States of America.Our men and women in uniform are bearers of a proud military tradition that has been dutifully passed forward—from generation to generation—for more than two centuries. In times of war and peace alike, our veterans have served with courage and distinction in the face of tremendous adversity, demonstrating an unfaltering commitment to America and our people. Many have made the ultimate sacrifice to preserve the country they loved. The selflessness of our service members is unmatched, and they remind us that there are few things more fundamentally American than doing our utmost to make a difference in the lives of others.

Autumn Days

About 30 boys, girls and adults took advantage of the "Hunters Safety Classes" being offered by the Kent County Sheriff's Department three nights this week to prepare for opening day of deer season on Tuesday, November 15th. The classes were conducted at the Alpine Township Offices at 5255 Alpine Ave NW.

Fricano's Pizza restaurant located at 5808 Alpine Ave., NW in Comstock Park is truly decorated for the harvest and Thanksgiving season. And of course their pizza was rated best in Pure Michigan this year. Harvest Nights began the first Thursday in October, with Live Bluegrass every Thursday. At last Thursday's weekly meeting of the Comstock Park Rotary, club members were updated with the latest developments planned for the John Ball Park Zoo by it's excecutive director Brenda Stringer. They also learned the meaning of the word "Funicular", which is a type of rail road car the zoo hopes to be able to purchase thanks to a very generous donation.

Kent County Road Commission Celebrates 100th Anniversary

The Kent County Road Commission invited local municipalities to join them in celebrating theit 100th anniversary by hosting an open house this past Thursday at their complex on Scribner Ave. The Kent County Road Commission was established in 1911 by what was then the Kent County Board of (Township) Supervisors. Roads where still maintained by staff using horse and buggies, and it was not until 1925 that the Road Commission purchased it's first truck. One of the four main roads first maintained was Alpine Avenue. Alpine Township is very proud of the County Road Commission and the relationship the two organizations have maintained over the years.

Alpine Township Trustees Host Halloween Party

On Sunday afternoon, Alpine Township Trustees hosted a party for the children of Alpine Township at the Township Sports Complex at 1400 Alpine Church Street NW. Children and their parents and grandparents enjoyed free hot dogs, donuts, cider, candy, chips, ice cream, and even free pumpkins. Prizes were handed out for favorite costumes. There were also tattoos and face painting. The event was organized by Alpine Township Trustees Ron Cordes, Jim May and Ted Wallace with help from their families and many Alpine Township friends and supporters.
