Heat Relief for the Elderly

Older adults do not adjust as well as young people to sudden changes in temperature. They are more likely to have a chronic medical condition that changes normal body responses to heat.

They are also more likely to take prescription medicines that impair the body's ability to regulate its temperature or that inhibit perspiration  (CDC) Center for Disease Control and Prevention

Older adults who are at a greater risk for heat related health complications need to stay cool in spite of a fickle forecast. The Kent County Senior Millage provides adults age 60 and over who have a medical condition that is worsened by the heat with an air conditioning unit (documentation from a medical professional will be required). Seniors who do not have a medical reason, but still need relief from the heat, will be provided with a fan.

Funding is limited for the program and calls will be handled on a first come, first served case-by-case basis.  For more information, contact: Senior Neighbors (616) 459-6019. (Kent County Senior Neighbors)
